HISTORY OF THE SUNSHINE COAST BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

PHX WEBSITE (4).png

The Sunshine Coast Basketball Association (SCBA) is a testament to the dedication and passion of the basketball community on the Sunshine Coast. It has been a labor of love from three foundational clubs: Caloundra Amateur Basketball Association (Caloundra Heat), Maroochydore Eagles Basketball Association (Suncoast Clippers Basketball), and Noosa District Basketball Association (Noosa Cyclones).

Recognizing the need for a unified and stronger basketball presence in the region, a group of forward-thinking volunteers formed a steering committee to create what is now known as the Sunshine Coast Basketball Association, operating under the identity of Sunshine Coast Phoenix. Their vision was to provide a seamless pathway for athletes of all ages and skill levels while fostering a competitive and community-driven basketball environment.

Growth and Achievements

In its inaugural year, SCBA fielded 17 teams in the Basketball Queensland Junior Basketball Competition (BQJBC), now known as the Southern Queensland Junior Basketball Competition (SQJBC). Today, the association boasts an impressive 33 teams competing from U12s to U18s, along with 2 Queensland State League (QSL) teams, 5 QSL Youth League (QSLYL) teams, and 2 NBL1 North teams in the senior program.

The rapid growth and success of the SCBA did not go unnoticed. In its first year, Sunshine Coast Phoenix was honored as Association of the Year at the Sunshine Coast Sports Awards, a testament to the hard work, dedication, and community spirit of everyone involved.

A Thriving Basketball Community

With over 3,500 active members, SCBA has become one of the largest basketball associations in Queensland. The association continues to foster talent development, providing pathways for young athletes to progress from grassroots to elite competition. The integration of junior and senior programs has created opportunities for players, coaches, and officials to develop and succeed at higher levels of the sport.

SCBA’s commitment extends beyond competition; it actively engages with the wider community through basketball programs, school initiatives, and development pathways that encourage participation at all levels. The association also plays a crucial role in hosting regional tournaments, clinics, and development camps to further grow the sport.

Looking to the Future

As SCBA continues to evolve, the focus remains on expanding its reach, improving facilities, and strengthening partnerships with local businesses and government bodies. Future goals include increasing female participation, enhancing player development programs, and securing additional resources to support the ever-growing basketball community on the Sunshine Coast.

The journey of SCBA is a remarkable example of what can be achieved through collaboration, vision, and an unwavering commitment to the game. Sunshine Coast Phoenix is more than just a basketball association - it is a thriving, dynamic community that continues to shape the future of basketball in Queensland.
